SoHo Forum: A Debate on Nayib Bukele’s Security Policies
On 27 January 2025, I was invited to a debate about El Salvador’s controversial but seemingly effective security policies hosted by SoHo Forum, held in New York City.
For a little over an hour, I tried to warn against ignoring the rule of law when combatting insecurity, as it often leads to abuses of power. I also shared some of the lesser known sides of El Salvador’s war on gangs, such as the undermining of judicial independence, the growing criminalization of critical voices, and the weakening of checks and balances.
