Open Government Partnership Summit: Panel on Media Freedom and its Threats

On 6 September 2023, I participated in a panel named Media Freedom as a Catalyst of Open Government at the Open Government Partnership Summit in Tallinn, Estonia.

I shared the main challenges journalists face in countries experiencing democratic backsliding and highlighted how media freedom and democracy cannot be taken for granted.

“In democracies, there are no happy endings,” I said. “This is not a fairy tale where we watch a democracy flourish and then leave it to sustain itself. Access to information, media freedom, and accountability do not grow on their own.”
